Internationale Tagung zum Thema "Goethe und Schopenhauer"
Goethe-Nationalmuseum Weimar
4.-6. September 2014

beiden kaum wissenschaftlich aufgearbeitet.
Wissenschaft, Farbenlehre, Musik, Charakterlehre. Die wissenschaftliche
Leitung liegt in den Händen von Søren R. Fauth (Århus/DK) und Daniel
Schubbe (Hagen).

Gesucht werden Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen und
Nachwuchswissenschaftler, die zusätzlich zu eingeladenen Referentinnen
und Referenten (u. a. Olaf Breidbach, Barbara Neymeyr, Theda Rehbock,
Rolf Selbmann, David E. Wellbery) einen thematisch einschlägigen Vortrag
von max. 30 Minuten halten möchten. Die Tagungs- und Reisekosten werden
erstattet. Die Tagungsbeiträge sollen in Form eines Sammelbandes
publiziert werden. Interessenten senden bitte einen Abstract (max. 2500
Zeichen) des geplanten Beitrags bis zum 15. November 2013 per E-mail an

Wolfram Hogrebe

Hegel to Russia and Back

Hegel

April 12 & 13, 2013  |  9:00 AM to 6:00 PM EST  |  The Jordan Center’s Hegel Conference

The Hegel to Russia and Back conference is sponsored by the the Humanities Initiative, the City University of New York, and the Jordan Center for the Advanced Study of Russia.
Building on and in many respects departing from traditional discussions of Hegel’s influence on generations of Russian thinkers, recent work on Hegel in Russia has significantly broadened its scope.  This conference seeks to explore the effects of migrating Hegelianism on a wide range of socio-cultural practices: poetics of everyday behavior, fashioning of the self in history, mutations of narrative form, historiographic imaginaries of the modern, techniques of statecraft, literary criticism, etc.  The activist and far-reaching nature of Russian engagement with Hegel’s philosophy during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries provides us with especially rich material for continuing to pose the central Hegelian question of the relationship between the rational and the actual, while at the same time thematizing the mechanisms of trans-cultural reception itself.

Hegel et le mouvement phénoménologique

Université de Pise (fin mai 2014)

Call for paper

Supervision: Prof. Dr. Alfredo Ferrarin

Organisateurs: Dr. Danilo Manca, Dr. Elisa Magrì

CALL FOR PAPERS

HEGEL'S CONCEPTION OF CONTRADICTION: LOGIC, LIFE AND HISTORY

May 16-17, 2013, Institute of Philosophy, Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium

Invited speakers:

Angelica Nuzzo, CUNY / Brooklyn College (New York)
Annette Sell (Ruhr-Universität Bochum)
Rocio Zambrana (University of Oregon)

Hegel's philosophy is notorious for its claim that all things are contradictory. Whereas Marxists took this to mean that the social-political world exhibits real contradictions, non-Hegelian philosophers argued that Hegelian dialectic annihilates the very principle of scientific reasoning. Recently, however, various researchers have started to move away from this dichotomy in order to explore the potential of Hegel's conception of contradiction in more fruitful ways. The workshop aims to bring together researchers who address this crucial element of Hegel's philosophy. It (1) addresses the role of contradiction, negativity and life in works such as the Science of Logic, (2) brings Hegel's understanding of the contradictions that animate historical processes to bear on contemporary conflicts and contradictions, and (3) assesses the ways in which philosophers such as Marx, Kierkegaard and Adorno appropriated, criticized and modified Hegel's account of contradiction and/or negativity.

We now invite abstracts of up to 500 words for 20 minutes presentations (+ 15 minutes discussion). Please send the abstracts to karin.deboer@hiw.kuleuven.be no later than March 1, 2013. Unfortunately, we cannot provide for travel and lodging costs. For any questions, please contact Karin de Boer at karin.deboer@hiw.kuleuven.be

Fichte's Deduction of the External World
I argue that Fichte's deduction of the external world is not an argument motivated by external world skepticism, but rather an argument that aims to establish the necessary conditions of free self-consciousness. I show that there are three concepts of "world" involved in his deduction, and that only one concept is suited for a deduction that attempts to establish the possibility of freedom. I conclude by arguing that sociality is a necessary condition of an objective world for Fichte.
Commentator: Nicholas Mowad <nmowad@hotmail.com> (Independent Scholar)
Rafeeq Hasan (The University of Chicago)
Politics, Property, Personhood: Kant's Rousseauian Return
I contrast two ways of interpreting Kant's argument in the Doctrine of Right for the provisionality of the state of nature. Weak provisionality holds that in the state of nature the norms of justice are in place. However, agents lack appropriate motivations to obey these norms. By contrast, strong provisionality holds that in the absence of a legitimate political order the content of property rights, a crucial class of moral norms, remains indeterminate. I argue that Kant holds a version of the strong provisionality thesis according to which making claims to justice absent a state is a practical self-contradiction.
Commentator: Andreja Novakovic (The College of William and Mary)
Lydia Moland (Colby College)
Taking Hegel's Humor Seriously
Although Hegel’s early lectures on the philosophy of art suggest that art had run aground on the excesses of "subjective humor," I argue that we should take his description of "objective humor" seriously. In its "tarrying with" the object, objective humor embodies Hegel's idealist project; in its ability to help us withstand hardship, it allows us to be at home in the world. Objective humor also illustrates the attitude Hegel thinks modern agents should have towards the norms of ethical life: norms that are neither relative nor immutable but the product of intersubjective recognition and so very much our responsibility.
Commentator: Marcos Bisticas-Cocoves (Morgan State University)
Chair: Karen Ng (Siena College)

Symposium: Struggle and Recognition in Hegel, Nietzsche and Honneth

On 25 March 2013, the Centre for Political Philosophy at Leiden University will host a symposium on conflict and power in struggles for recognition, engaging with the work of Hegel, Nietzsche, and Honneth.
On Monday, 25 March 2013, the Centre for Political Philosophy at Leiden University will host a symposium on conflict and power in struggles for recognition, engaging with the work of Hegel, Nietzsche, and Honneth.

What possibilities and limits on mutual recognition does the notion of struggle bring in these three thinkers? What kind of struggle do they each have in mind and what kind if recognition? Which constitutes the most compelling perspective for thinking about the relation between conflict and mutual recognition?

V. INTERNATIONALER HELMUTH PLESSNER KONGRESS
Deutschland - Europa - Welt

Helmuth Plessners ,Verspätete Nation' in der Diskussion
WIESBADEN, 04.- 06.09.2012

CALL FOR Papers: Metaphysik 2012. V. Weltkongress -  08.11.- 10.11.2012. The Scientific Committee invites authors to submit their abstracts for consideration and inclusion in the programme. Kindly note that Notification of Acceptance of Abstracts will be given as soon as possible.
Key dates: ABSTRACT SUBMISSION DEADLINE: until June 30th, 2012; FINAL PAPER SUBMISSION DEADLINE: AUGUST 31st, 2012; INVITED SPEAKER MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION: JULY 30th, 2012.

Direct reproduction from your electronically submitted abstract text means that any errors in spelling, grammar or scientific data will be reproduced as submitted. Rule of Two: Each presenting author may PRESENT a maximum of two abstracts at the conference. The number of submissions is however not limited. Should an author have more than two abstracts accepted for presentation, a co-author must be named as presenting author for one or more abstracts. If you wish to make any corrections to an abstract already submitted or if you wish to submit other abstracts, you send an email to the Conference Secretariat.
Organisateurs : Gilles Marmasse, Alexander Schnell

Termin 31. Abstract inkl. kurzer Angabe zur Respondenz.

Einsendeschluss: 1. Juni 2012

Please use the PDF-file format for submission and render your text completely anonymous, allowing for blind refereeing. Membership of the ESEMP is not compulsory to submit a paper. However, if you want to become a member of the ESEMP, please contact the Treasurer of the ESEMP, Hubertus.Busche@FernUni-Hagen.de. The deadline for submissions of papers is 30th of April 2012. Papers will be selected by the board of the ESEMP (President, Vice-Presidents, Treasurer, Secretary), assisted by the organizers of the colloquia. We will consider submissions in the three official languages of the ESEMP (English, French and German) equally. For each talk, there will be time for a 30-minute presentation, with about another 15 minutes for discussion. All accepted papers will be eligible in case of the publication of the proceedings.

CALL FOR PAPERS

KANT AND MODALITY, HUMBOLDT UNIVERSITY OF BERLIN, JULY 5-7 2012

Kant?s various modal terms play a central yet to a large extent
neglected role throughout his philosophy, from metaphysics, logic and
epistemology to ethics, aesthetics and theology. Kant?s transcendental
method itself is deeply bound to how he understands the necessary
conditions of the possibility of some actual features of our cognitive
capacities. Although lately the importance of modality to several
key-issues of Kant?s philosophy has been recognized, his views about
modality remain a poorly understood and under-researched area.

The conference Kant and Modality seeks to promote the important issues
of Kant?s theory of modality and to exchange ideas by bringing together
scholars working on all issues relating to his conception and theory of
modality. It takes place at Humboldt University of Berlin on July 5?7
2012. In addition to the invited speakers, two slots are available for
presentation of 45 minutes, followed by 45 minutes of discussion. We
cover all accommodation costs and travelling costs of the participants
up to 500 Euro.

Those interested in presenting their work on any topic related to Kant?s
conception of modality should send a max. 1000 word description of their
topic along with a CV to t.t.kannisto@ifikk.uio.no no later than 15th of
April. Priority will be given to topics focusing on Kant?s theory of
modality exclusively rather than in relation to other philosophers or
fields of philosophy.

Possible topics include but are not restricted to the following:
? Kant?s conception and theory of modality
? Logical, real, deontic, epistemic etc. modalities
? The relationship between different kinds of modality (e.g. logical
and real)
? The relevance of modality to Kant?s philosophy (e.g. to metaphysics,
ethics, a priori/a posteriori distinction, philosophical method,
justification, transcendental idealism, development of Kant?s thought etc.)
? Kant?s conception of being and existence
? Comparison of different interpretations of Kant?s philosophy of modality

Organizers: Tobias Rosefeldt, Humboldt University of Berlin, and Toni
Kannisto, University of Oslo.
